Didn't take too many pictures on this, the last day of the trip.
We started out at the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge with the sighting
of a Pileated Woodpecker. Nice way to begin the day. We saw some of the usual
herons and egrets but Cheri's heart was taken by the sight of some fuzzy Green
Heron babies.
Cheri noted that the water levels were quite low - in fact, the lowest she had ever seen there. Black Vultures were abundant - some of them were relaxing and taking in the view.
We saw a number of alligators in a variety of sizes and a ribbon snake. Some of the "better" birds were Black-crowned Night-Heron, Black-necked Stilt, Northern Bobwhite, Pine Warbler, Least Bittern and, of course, Limpkin.
After Lake Woodruff, we headed for the "famous" Zellwood Muck Farms. On the way, we saw a Wild Turkey. We couldn't really get in to Zellwood, so we birded it from the periphery. And the birding there was good. Some highlights were Florida Scrub-Jay, Eastern Meadowlark, Bobolink, Chimney Swift, and Blue Grosbeak.
The numbers game for the trip ended with 1 lifer and 123 species for the trip. Fourteen of the birds I saw were new for Florida and this brought my total Florida list up to 221. But the trip was more than numbers - it was great to be out and take pictures and very nice to bird with Cheri once more.
