Helen Hays

A Wellesley College graduate with a Master's degree in ornithology from Cornell University, Helen has managed all aspects of the research station for 35 consecutive years. Playful, energetic, gracious and deeply involved with "her" terns, she says all but 1% of the hatchlings return to nest on the island. The oldest Common Tern Helen has tracked is twenty-six years old; the oldest Roseate is 25 years old. As other smaller nesting sites around Eastern Long Island are at risk of being destroyed or developed, Helen is here to see that Great Gull Island remains as a sanctuary.
