Near Red Rock CanyonNevada - 1999

Thursday, June 10th Red Rock Canyon

Just before I arrived at Red Rock Canyon, I stopped my car to take some photographs of the approach to the park. (Hope that YR appreciates this.) While taking the pictures, I saw a bird on a nearby bush – I had left my binoculars in the car a few feet away so I went to get them. By the time I returned, the bird was gone. But, a coyote was crossing the road right near me. Wanted to take a picture, but had put my camera in the car when I got my binoculars. By the time I got the camera, the coyote was disappearing in the brush. Lesson learned.

A number of people had told me that this was a beautiful area and they were right! The canyon was obviously well-named – magnificent rock formations in a rich red color. An area of the park called Calico Hills was formed from layers of multicolored rocks.

As I drove along, I saw a Cactus Wren and some Violet-green Swallows. I stopped at the Willow Springs picnic area and delighted in the antics of a chipmunk. The first bird that I saw was pecking at some seeds which had been scattered on the ground. Quail-like. My life Chukar! The lighting wasn't that good, but I took a number of pictures. It seemed quite tame and approached to within five feet of me.

Added a Juniper Titmouse to my trip list there. From the picnic area, I walked down a little trail where I took some pictures of petroglyph handprints and, of course, more wild flowers. White-throated Swifts twittered overhead. For the first time, I began seeing large numbers of prickly pear cactus, some of which were in bloom. Cholla also became apparent.
